Celine x Gen Z, election marketing wins, and some sqiggly home decor trends
Issue No.05. Your monthly newsletter on brand and cultural moments.
Hi fam, welcome back to another issue of brandish. If you’ve enjoyed reading this newsletter, please give it a like above^^ 💖💖
This month’s discoveries: Singapore Airlines turned their grounded planes into pop up restaurants… and sold out in 30 mins. The MoMA roasts Kim K’s bday and Kylie made cookies. Play-Doh launched grown-up scents. And most importantly, Bunny, the “talking” dog that all of TikTok (and myself) are obsessed with.
Now let’s get into the issue!
The bites:
1. The election: YAY! I’m done thinking about Nevada and Georgia
Originally, I had planned a whole post on how to do marketing during an election but tbh, while I’m thrilled with the results I’m also feeling pretty electioned-out. So instead I’ll share my favorite election-related content:
Who did marketing right? Calm who’s election sponsorship was equally dark and comical.
Who capitalized on the moment? The Four Season Total Landscaping (not to be confused with the Four Seasons) with their “Make America Rake Again” merch.
Who did social right? R/GA with their satirical-but-business-relevant tweets.
2. Maybe you should think about redecorating your home…
With everyone forced indoors, home decor was one of the most positively-impacted industries this quarantine, both the Overstock and Wayfair stock price surged over 1,000% since COVID. And while tiny offices and indoor gyms grew in popularity, we also saw one unexpected trend take off: Blobs and Squiggles.
Yes, you read that right. For almost a decade we’ve been told to aspire for the minimalistic Kinfolk aesthetic in our homes and it took a world pandemic to make us realized that minimalism is also kinda…. boring. Maybe it was the sheer terror of the outside world, but 2020 brought with it light-heartedness, color, and fun back into our homes. The homes on Instagram now look playful, personal, and generally more visually interesting. And the design aesthetic is simple: wiggly lines and colorful, freeform blobs— basically as far away from bare white walls as you can get. (Read more)
If you’re vibing with trend, I’d recommend:
Starting with the one that started it all, the Goober Candle.
Then getting yourself a side table from The Wiggle Room NYC.
And if you’re really committed, go for the Ettore Sottsass "Ultrafragola" Mirror.
2. GenZ-inspired Celine’s Spring-Summer 2021 show
It wouldn’t be a brandish newsletter if we didn’t talk about GenZ. If you still don’t think this generation is taking over, maybe this will get you listening. For those that aren’t as familiar Celine, is a luxury fashion brand that’s been around for forever and their style is undeniably french bourgeois. Yet, their most recent runway collection screams GenZ x TikTok. We were expecting blazers, pleated skirts, and ruffles and what we got was crop tops, hoodies, sneakers, and baseball caps. This was a rather unexpected move from Celine but also a brilliant one. Artistic Director, Slimane, is known for his “understanding of the Zeitgeist” and to me, this collection is the visual representation of TikTok. (Read more)
That’s all for now, friends. As always, I’d love to hear from you- what you liked/would like to see more of. If you enjoyed reading this, please share it with a friend… and if you hated it, share it with an enemy 😈
Oh, but before you go, it’s officially November so you know what that means:
